The colour is the front

Every other deck on this site sets type. This one cannot: a colour flashcard whose front says “red” in black ink is a word card. So the front is a block of the colour itself, inset inside the card with a thin outline round it, and the name goes on the back.

Eleven colours: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, pink, brown, black, white and grey. Six to a sheet in a 2 by 3 grid is 2 sheets and 4 pages with the backs. The card is 95 by 92.3 mm and the backs set at 64 pt.

The outline, and why white is in the set

White is in the set, and a white block on white paper is not a card at all. Every swatch is outlined for that reason, which also keeps the yellow and the pink legible on a page that has been photocopied.

If your printer is black and white

The swatches come out as greys, and the deck still works, because the name is on the back. You lose the colour and you keep the pack. The inks are chosen to survive a domestic printer rather than to be exact: every one of them is pulled back from the corner of the gamut, because a fully saturated red prints as a muddy brown on ordinary paper.

Colour or color

Spelling switches the one word in the set that changes across the Atlantic. The deck is set to grey; set it to the American spelling and that card reads gray. Nothing else in the pack is spelled differently.
