Sight word flashcards

One side only

These cards have nothing on the back, and the press knows it: a sight word deck prints one side and the file has 6 pages for 6 sheets rather than twelve for six. A blank back is half the paper for nothing.

That is also how the cards are used. You hold one up and somebody reads it. There is no answer to check against, because the word is the answer.

The lists

Three lists, from the word lists Edward Dolch published in 1936: pre-primer with 40 words, primer with 52, and first grade with 41. They are the words that turn up most often in children’s books and that mostly cannot be sounded out, which is why they are learned whole.

The bench above is set to the primer list. 52 words, ten to a sheet in a 2 by 5 grid, so 6 sheets. The card is 95 by 55.4 mm and the type is 64 pt.

What this deck is not

It is a list of words on card. It is not a reading scheme, it is not ordered by difficulty, and nothing here has an opinion about when a child should meet any of it. The lists are published; the press prints them.
