What is on the card

The front carries the letter. The back carries a word beginning with the sound that letter usually makes at the start of a word, which is not always the letter’s name: X backs on to “fox” rather than a word starting with X, because the deck is built on the sound the letter makes rather than on its name.

26 cards, six to a sheet in a 2 by 3 grid, so 5 sheets and 10 pages counting the backs. The card is 95 by 92.3 mm, nearly square, which is the shape six to a sheet gives on A4. The fronts set at 64 pt and the backs at 52.98 pt.

Capitals, small letters, or both

Case has three settings. Both puts “A a” on the front, which is the usual teaching card. Upper puts only the capital, lower only the small letter. The letter page is this same deck set to capitals only.

Phonics

The back of the card is a sound rather than a spelling, so the deck works as a phonics set as well as an alphabet one. It is one letter to one sound and it stops there: this deck does not cover digraphs, blends, or any of the spellings where two letters make one sound.
