The pre-primer list: 40 words, ten to a sheet, on four sheets and printed one side only.
The pre-primer list
40 words, which is the shortest of the three Dolch lists and the one usually met first. Ten to a sheet in a 2 by 5 grid is 4 sheets, and because the cards have no back the file is 4 pages rather than eight. The card is 95 by 55.4 mm at 64 pt.
Where the list comes from
Edward Dolch published these lists in 1936 after counting which words turned up most often in children’s books. The pre-primer list holds the commonest of them. It is a count of what is on the page in a body of books, not a curriculum, and it has been reprinted for ninety years because the commonest words in English have not changed much.
Working through it
Forty cards is a stack you can hold. Deal the ones that come straight away into one pile and the rest into another, and print the second pile again next week by pasting those words into the box on the flashcard maker page. Nothing here tracks what anybody knows; the two piles do that.
The next list
The primer list is 52 words and the first grade list is 41. Both are on the sight word page, which is the same deck with level set differently.
The file
7,514 bytes over 4 pages, black only, PDF.
